Writing Crest Toothpaste about the materials they use to make their tubes.

I was about to throw out a used up tube of Crest toothpaste when the crest.com website caught my eye. I decided to write them about their packaging:

https://crest.com/en-us/contact-us

Dear Crest,

Every time we finish up a tube of toothpaste, I feel rotten throwing the tube in the trash. Do we really need to pollute the earth just to brush our teeth or leave non-biodegradable garbage for future generations to wad through.

Could Crest put its toothpaste tubes out of post-consumer waste? If not, why not? And could you please make your packaging recyclable? It’s because I care about the earth we live on and I don’t want to contribute to crapping it up for my grandchildren.

I got a great email response from Crest:

Hi Emily,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to us here at Crest. I’m sorry to hear you’re disappointed with our package design. I want to assure you I’ll be sharing your feedback with our design and manufacturing teams. I’d also like to provide you with some information on what we do to maintain good environmental practices.

As part of our strategy to grow responsibly, our environmental efforts are guided and inspired by our long-term environmental sustainability vision that includes:

Powering our plants with 100% renewable energy

Using 100% renewable or recycled materials for all products and packaging

Having zero consumer and manufacturing waste go to landfills

Designing products that delight consumers while maximizing our conservation of resources

This vision is stretching and will take decades to achieve. To ensure we are making progress toward this vision, we have set specific, measurable goals within our environmental focus areas of Products and Operations.

I thank you again for getting in touch. Your feedback is very important to us and if there’s anything else I can help you with please don’t hesitate to contact us again.

Need to get back in touch? Please do not change the subject line, just hit reply. This makes sure we receive your message.

I took them up on their offer to REPLY back with the following:

Dear Crest Customer Care,

Thank you for getting back to me.

I read this to mean that they have PLANS to be environmentally responsible, but you are not yet, in reality, making a practice of or implementing these goals.  I also don’t know how much you have achieved these goals and if your stated goals are just lip service to shut people like me up.  It would be great if you would publish their progress on these goals, speak out and inspire other companies to do the same (and giving them “best practice” advice on how they can do it), state ON THE PACKAGING the extent to which it is made from reclaimed materials, and if you would made the tubes recyclable (and, again, labeled them as such).
Thank you.

I wrote the NY Times about their move hiring a reporter that is a Climate Change Denier

I don’t understand how the NY Times can defend hiring a Climate Science denier at the same time the NY Times is professing to be a beacon of truth with slogans like, “Truth.  It has no alternative.” Especially when they then go and defend their decision by saying that “millions of people agree with him.”  No matter how many people believe a lie, it’s still a lie.  Millions believing something untrue does not make it true.

https://thinkprogress.org/new-york-times-defends-hiring-extreme-climate-denier-millions-agree-with-him-1655c23a524c

I wrote Liz Spayed who is the Public Editor. The “Contact Us” page on NY Times says the job of the, “public editor, Liz Spayd, looks at issues of journalistic integrity and news judgment at The New York Times.”

Here’s link to NY Times Contact Us Page:
http://www.nytimes.com/help/index.html?redir=myacc#newsroom

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE write them to protest this move!!

Here’s what I wrote (out of complete disbelief and desperation) on 4/16/2017:

Dear Public Editor Liz Spayed:

I’m deeply concerned after reading that the NY Times has hired a contributor who is a climate change denier and that the paper has defended this decision by saying that millions of people agree with this person’s views. Is this the truth? The Washington Post created the tagline “Democracy Dies in Darkness.” This means that the light of truth is what keeps democracy alive. Doesn’t The New York Times also seek to shine the light of Truth on the darkness? It seems to me it would seek to do that. Then why, for the love of God, would NY Times give voice to the darkness? The fact that millions of people believe (conveniently) the lie of climate denial does not invalidate the truth. It makes the mission of Truth all the more important. To me, climate denial IS THE DARKNESS. Climate Denial is a lie, a sham. It is anti-science and anti-intellectualism at its most basic level. Climate Denial might be convenient, but it is dangerous and wrong.

I’ve looked to the NY Times as a shining light in the darkness. We are long time readers and subscribers. Is the New York Times going to be just as unreliable, a liar, just like Brietbart or Fox?

How can anyone trust NY Times reporting is you are giving into the lies of the dark side? What is going on? Is this capitulation? What has the NY Times done????

I got an email back responding to my concern:

Dear Ms. Gleichenhaus,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We appreciate your concern, one which has been shared by a number of readers. The public editor has raised these concerns with the editor of editorial and, as she noted on Twitter, she will be addressing the issue in her column.

I hope this helps. Please do not hesitate to write to us if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Thanks again for writing, and for reading The Times.

Best regards,

Today, I wrote Campbell Soup, too.

Today, I also wrote to Campbell Soup. They do not offer an email on their website, so I wrote a letter.

Denise Morrison
CEO
Campbell Soup Company

Camden, NJ 08103-1701

Dear Ms. Morrison,

I read about and watched videos of you chatting it up and gleefully enjoying the company of Donald Trump as part of a meeting he had with manufacture leaders.

I’m just wondering why the repeal of regulations that protect human and environmental health would be good for a manufacturer of food products.

Why is there so much glee in poisoning the environment and the food you sell to your customers? Wouldn’t any reasonable person think it was better NOT to poison people and the earth?

As a woman and a parent, I would really love to understand why poisoning people and the earth is preferable to not doing that. And, what is the ultimate benefit to your company in doing that. Wouldn’t NOT poisoning the earth and the environment be a better choice?

Instead of colluding with people like Donald Trump and his Republican pals, why not BE A LEADER in using sustainably grown good as ingredients in your products? Instead of lobbying for ways to get away with poisoning the water, air, land and food that sustain all life in earth, why not lead the way in finding ways to grow food in a way that won’t poison the people who buy your products and the earth that hosts your operations?

Isn’t it better to NOT poison the earth and the people who consume your products?

If you disagree, and you think poisoning your customers and the earth is a better option, why? Why is poison preferable to sustainability?

Please be a leader and not collude with those who prefer to poison God’s great creations and instead choose to sustain and nurture health and beauty.

Thank you,

Emily

Today, I wrote Ocean Spray asking them about sustainable farming and why pesticides are preferable to health

I rode Amtrak yesterday and picked up a copy of the terrific Amtrak magazine THE NATIONAL.  In it was an article about an organic cranberry farm in Washington state:

Tart & Soul
On Washington’s Cranberry Coast, an organic bog is offering an eco- and health-conscious alternative to Big Cranberry
http://www.amtrakthenational.com/made-in-america-cranberry-coast

I read that cranberries are one of the most polluted of fruits we eat. The pesticides don’t wash off well and producers of non-organic cranberries pollute the waters where this fruit is grown. I wrote Ocean Spray today:

I understand that current law allows Ocean Spray to get away with it, and soon agricultural polluters like you are going to get even more free reign to pollute our nation’s waters and the foods with a guy like Pruitt at the EPA and Republicans excited to do away w regulations that protect human and environmental health (like the Clean Waters Act).

But what is the ultimate benefit to your company of polluting the environment and poisoning your customers? I really want to understand that.

Why not become a leader in sustainable farming? Instead of lobbying for ways to get away with poisoning the water, air, land and food that sustain all life in earth, why not lead the way in finding ways to grow food in a way that won’t poison the people who buy your products and the earth that hosts your operations? Isn’t it better to NOT poison the earth and the people who consume your products? And if you disagree, why? Why is poison preferable to sustainability?

I got an excellent response from Ocean Spray in my email today:

May 1, 2017

Hello Emily,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us. We love to hear from people who are into cranberries as much as we are. When you purchase Ocean Spray® products you are supporting the more than 700 family farms which own the brand. Ocean Spray takes great pride in manufacturing premium products.

We, too, share your concern in the important matter of pesticides. Over the past years, Ocean Spray has made many efforts to address our consumers’ concerns with environmental issues, particularly those dealing with pesticide usage.

Ocean Spray’s 700+ farmer-owners have adopted 6 farm sustainability principles, including:

  1. Farm succession for generations
  2. Water Stewardship
  3. Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
  4. Soil Health and fertilizer management
  5. Ecosystem conservation and biodiversity
  6. Well-being for workers and the community

Our cranberry and grapefruit farmers take great efforts to grow fruit in a responsible way utilizing integrated pest management (IPM) that minimizes impacts to the environment and people to ensure that consumers can always count on fresh, quality and sustainability produced products from Ocean Spray. We rely on IPM principles, such as hand weeding, pest scouting, and understanding pest lifecycles and behaviors, to help determine the most responsible approach with the goal to always minimize the use of chemicals as much as possible.

Ocean Spray also has one of the most innovative and comprehensive residue testing programs in the world! Our Pesticides Screen Program aims at ensuring the safety of our fruit and finished product by analyzing fruit pre-harvest, during delivery for compliance, and finished goods. Fruit not in compliance is rejected. Additionally, we have agricultural scientists on staff to assist farmers on IPM best practices. We also are leading the way in pollinator management, Ocean Spray farmers are taking steps to conserve and enhance pollinator health by planting habitat for pollinators and choosing pest management materials that are pollinator safe as they recognize the critical importance of bees for food production and the natural environment.

Thanks for choosing Ocean Spray. Be sure to visit us again sometime at OceanSpray.com, where you can get all the latest information on our products, find delicious recipes, and join the Cranberry Club for special news and offers. Don’t hesitate to give us a call at 1-800-662-3263 if you have any more questions or comments.

Tastes Good. Good For You.

Addendum, 5/5/2017

I got a customer survey from Ocean Spray just now and they asked for my feelings about the response I got from Customer Service rep.  A couple of questions allowed me to give written feedback to the questions.  I can’t remember now what the questions were, but I saved my responses to two:

I am upset about the use of poisonous pesticides to grow food. The pesticides poison not just the food, but our waterways, land, and animals. I conveyed this deep concern in my email. The representative responded with information and in a respectful tone. I appreciated that. Even if I was not satisfied with the actual information. I would have preferred included some kind of statement that Ocean Spray is working to grow all its food without poisons, is cleaning up the damage their positions have caused in the past, is working to grow all food using renewable energy and is actively supporting political candidates who actively work to save the environment from getting spoiled by industry. This is an unreasonable wish, corporations, generally run by conservatives, will ever care about anything more than making money (health of human beings and the environment be damned)…you see, I’ve become rather cynical.

Listen, I don’t want this to be an indictment of the customer service representative and how they made me “feel.” You want them to make me feel good all while Ocean Spray is sticking a knife in? That’s no good. What I want is correct and TRUTHFUL information, to feel that I’m not being duped but that Ocean Spray as a company is driven by a commitment to integrity, and a guarantee that Ocean Spray will do everything in its corporate power to support the health of HUMAN BEINGS and the ENVIRONMENT. That is a problem of company policy and practice (no matter how some customer service rep makes me feel about it).
