Friends, the palm oil ingredient in a lot of our foods is a significant cause of deforestation and habitat loss. IT’S AN INGREDIENT IN FOOD. There are other ingredients.

We need to start demanding that food manufacturers stop using palm oil. And we can begin by reading ingredient labels and making other choice. And we can write food manufactures and retailers.

This is important. We are not the only creatures on God’s Green Earth. We share this planet. Let’s be good (caring, informed, responsible) citizens of our country and of Planet Earth.

Red Sun Farms, some good paper tray packaging (and, sadly, some plastic)

I wrote Red Sun Farms to praise them for their paper tray packaging of tomatoes, but found that they also use plastic containers for other produce.

I bought some of your delicious organic grape tomatoes. I really appreciate that these tomatoes came in a paper tray. I chose your tomatoes over other offerings BECAUSE they came in paper as opposed to all the others which were packaged in plastic.

I’m very concerned about what single use plastics are doing to our beautiful earth. I went to your website to research your packaging, but was disturbed to find that you also have plastic boxes for other produce.

I genuinely hope you will choose to use the paper tray packaging for ALL your products.

Note to Hippie Organics about Plastic Packaging

Today, I used the online form for HippieOrganics.com

Dear Hippie Organics,

Your graphics are beautiful. I appreciate very much that your produce is organic. I bought some of your asparagus from Whole Foods yesterday and am very pleased with the lovely asparagus.  But the asparagus had a plastic Hippie Organics label. And I can see from your homepage photos that you use plastic packaging for your other products.  Single Use plastics have become a terrible problem for the whole world. I have seen lots of great produce in different kinds of paper or cardboard packaging.  How about bamboo/sugar cane paper/cardboard packaging (even better).  I’ve begun using tree free paper products at home and I’m delighted with them.  But if we want TREES to clean our water and air (and as habitats for wildlife) and if we want to NOT eat and drink microplastics in our food and water (including as a component of your very nice organic produce) and if we’d like a beautiful earth not polluted with packaging, we need people and companies that package products to stop packaging products in plastic.  Maybe you could stop doing that and be a leader for others to follow?

Audubon.org, of all orgs, sent plastic in the mail!

I try hard to put my money where my mouth is and donate to causes I care about.  My family, though immeasurably blessed in so many ways, is not rich.  So, I cannot claim to be a prolific philanthropist.  But I give in the spirit of, “my little bit will add up more a lot if lots of other people also give little bits.”

One organization I care about is Audubon Society. I absolutely adore birds and care very much about their conservation and support.

A mailer from Audubon arrived asking for a donation and I could not believe, it came with a plastic window envelope and included a hard plastic “membership card.”  The first thing I did was donate a little something.  The next thing I did was write them a note:

Dear Audubon,

I love the work you do. And I just went in a small donation.

However, I hope that, in working to raise supportive funds, you can not contribute to the problem of plastics that are one of the environmental problems birds face.  I got a mailer that both had a plastic window in the envelope and a plastic membership card inside.

Come on!  DON’T SENT PLASTIC IN THE MAIL if you don’t want plastic to be a factor in poisoning birds.  Use envelopes and paper made from 100% post consumer waste (or tree free materials) and give cardboard cards (which can also be made from post consumer waste). And have an open window in the envelop (not a doggon piece of plastic).

CODA:
To their credit, turning the card over, it is marked to contain 50% recycled content.  Still, I don’t like it.  We need to totally eliminate the use of this kind of plastic. The last thing organizations like Audubon should do is send out mass mailings that include any kind of plastic.  It’s almost all going to end up in landfill.

Writing comment to Glad Cling Wrap Ads on Facebook

I was doing some work on Facebook came across ads that Glad has posted about their cling wrap. I responded:

No no no. Put your food in reusable containers with lids. We need to REDUCE (and sooner than later ELIMINATE) single use plastics. A good first step is NOT using plastic wrap!

I just read this: “Only two things last forever, extinction and plastic.” Use that plastic wrap for your dang cookies and that plastic will pollute land fills or become micro plastics in our waterways (for us to drink or eat with our fish) until long after our own great grandchildren are dead. Honestly folks, we must finally decide to be intelligent/responsible consumers. Don’t use plastic wrap. Put your cookies in reusable containers with lids.

We humans cannot completely curtail or stop consuming products.  But we CAN change our habits and we CAN make better choices for the things we buy, and we CAN demand that producers provide sustainable products manufactured in sustainable ways.

When it comes to using toilet paper, tissues, and paper towels, there are TREE FREE PAPER PRODUCTS! We do not need to wipe our asses, our noses, or our counter tops with trees.

Or, at the very least, paper products made from 100% recycled content. I currently buy tree free paper products from Brandless. But there are many others.

It’s the TREE FREE part that important, regardless of where you get it. The more thought I’ve given it, the more absurd it seems for humanity to cut down trees for us to clean our selves up after the toilet or in the kitchen.

Mother Earth needs trees for many purposes. Among a whole myriad of essential jobs, trees clean our air, create oxygen, hold soil in place, and filter water. Humanity should be doing everything possible to REforest, not cut down trees to make toilet paper and cheap furniture. Yes, people need jobs, but maybe the jobs making these things can be done using sustainable materials. How about that?

It’s not easy to find these products and they are more expensive. But the more people ask for these products and but these products, the cheaper and more available they will become.

I have written grocery stores and department stores asking them to stock these items for purchase in stores and online. Will you help me?

You don’t have to use paper to write letters. Write emails to company websites. Just go to any company’s CONTACT ME link and fill out the form. Tell them you think they should make their products and packaging from 100% post consumer waste, tree free, and plastic free. And, while they are at it, manufacturing should be done with carbon free methods. They CAN do it. We must demand that they do!

IF there is a demand, business will create the supply. It’s simple business and economics.

Until they do, Grove Collaborative, Amazon, and Brandless are companies I know of so far. I’m sure further research will reveal others! If you find other options, please post to inform.
